Rocky Mountain Lesson

Rocky Mountain Lesson ~ This project’s objective was to designate benchmarks for student work relating to The National Standards for Music Education. The standards addressed were A and G.

This project involved students in 3rd grade recording the song “Rocky Mountain” on a cassette tape. Then, they listened to themselves privately and assessed themselves according to the attached student evaluation sheet. I listened to the tapes at a later date and completed an evaluation.

The students assessed themselves on their accuracy and compared themselves to how they sounded when they sang the same song in 2nd grade. I assessed their singing accuracy. Later in the year, the students repeated the activity and in addition to assessing the students, I also determined how well they assessed their own work.

The recording and student listening took place during class time – 30 minutes each time. teacher evaluation took about 45 minutes outside of class each time.
